Year 7 Student Speaks at Future Geelong Summit

“If Kids Don’t Belong, a City Isn’t Thriving” – Alexander at Future Geelong Summit

Year 7 student Alexander took to the podium at the 2026 Future Geelong Summit held on Friday 27 Mar, to share his vision for the city’s future, especially for young people. in 2025 Alexander won the Deakin University U25 Future Leader award at the 2025 Future Geelong Leadership Awards. He was recognised for this award for founding ‘Shoot for Kindness, Blockout Bullying’ initiative. At the summit, Alexander spoke to more than 300 guests, including some of Geelong’s industry leaders, about the infrastructure, innovation and sports opportunities he believes will keep the city thriving over the next 30 years.

During his speech, Alexander made a powerful observation:

“If a city’s young people don’t feel they belong, or are being bullied, then really the city isn’t thriving.”

Speaking in front of such a large audience was a mix of nerves and excitement.

“It was both nerve-wracking and exciting at the same time, and surreal,” he said.

Alexander hopes his message encourages decision-makers to invest in initiatives that matter to young people. Among his suggestions is a 10,000-seat stadium for Geelong, which he believes could bring major sports and entertainment events to the city, create jobs and even allow the return of a NBL Geelong men’s team. He also celebrated that a half-court basketball area is planned for the waterfront.

Preparation for the speech was intensive. Alexander spent hours refining his message, thinking about how he could make a difference and rehearsing repeatedly. His most important advocates are his parents, who have supported him in this endeavour every step of the way. He also credits the support of his extended family, friends and teachers for his confidence. He loved rehearsing in front of his dog Boston :).

Looking back, Alexander is proud that he has been able to transform a challenging experience in primary school into something positive. His anti-bullying initiative, Shoot for Kindness, has grown from that experience, and he plans to continue this project in the future.

Alexander encourages other young people to speak up and share their ideas.

“Seek the advice and encouragement of your family and friends. Don’t be afraid to speak out—it can really make a difference.”

For Alexander, Iona College is more than just a school, it’s a safe space where he feels supported every day. His message at the Future Geelong Summit demonstrates that the city’s next generation of leaders is already stepping up, and that listening to young people can shape a brighter future for the community.
